Basically, State Bank of India (SBI) recruits at officer cadres through SBI PO exam, SBI Specialist officer exam and at clerical cadre as SBI Clerk exam.

SBI PO:

This is the Junior Management Level direct entry point for dynamic young graduates. A probationary officer gets exposed to challenging assignments. The opportunities include working in the various departments of SBI ranging from Personal Banking to Rural Banking, Credit, Forex, Treasury, etc. to name a few.

The annual recruitment exercise is conducted for the post of Probationary Officers for SBI and separately for Probationary Officers in Associate Banks of SBI. The advertisements are generally announced in the month of April & September respectively.

Eligibility criteria for SBI PO:

Essential academic qualifications:

For SBI PO exam, you have a Graduate degree in any discipline from a recognised University or any equivalent qualification recognised as such by the Central Government. Those who are in the Final year/ Semester of their Graduation may also apply provisionally subject to the condition that, if called for interview, they will have to produce proof of having passed the graduation examination on or before eligibility date as given in the related advertisement.

Age limit:

For SBI PO exam, age should be not below 21 years and not above 30 years as on eligibility date as given in the related advertisement. The Relaxation of Upper age allowed for various categories are as per GoI guidelines.

The number of chances to appear for SBI PO exams:

General: 4 times, General (PWD): 7 times, OBC: 7 times, OBC(PWD): 7 times, SC/SC(PWD)/ ST/ ST (PWD): No Restriction.

Candidates who have already appeared for the maximum number of chances permissible are not eligible to apply. The number of chances will be counted from the examination held on 18.04.2010. Appearing in Preliminary Examination for SBI PO exam will not be counted as a chance.

Salary of SBI PO:

Presently the starting basic pay is Rs.27,620/- (with 4 advance increments) in the scale of Rs. 23700-980/7-30560-1145/2-32850-1310/7-42020 applicable to Junior Management Grade Scale-I. The official will also be eligible for D.A, H.R.A/ Lease rental, C.C.A, Medical, and other allowances & perquisites as per rules in force from time to time. The total compensation per annum would be a minimum of Rs. 7.55 lacs and a maximum of Rs. 12.93 lacs depending on the place of posting and other factors.

SBI PO exam and syllabus:

The examination will be held in two phases preliminary and main. Candidates who will qualify in preliminary examination and shortlisted will have to appear for the Main examination and shortlisted candidates in the main examination will subsequently be called for a Group Discussion & Interview.

Phase-I: Preliminary Examination for SBI PO

Preliminary Examination consisting of Objective Tests for 100 marks will be conducted online. This test would be of 1-hour duration consisting of 3 Sections as follows:

Candidates have to qualify in each of the three tests by securing passing marks to be decided by the Bank. The adequate number of candidates in each category as decided by the Bank (approximately 20 times the numbers of vacancies subject to availability) will be shortlisted for the Main Examination.

Phase – II: Main Examination for SBI PO

Main Examination will consist of Objective Tests for 200 marks and Descriptive Test for 50 marks. Both the Objective and Descriptive Tests will be online. Candidates will have to answer Descriptive test by typing on the computer. Immediately after completion of the Objective Test, Descriptive Test will be administered.

  • Objective Test: The objective test of 3 hours duration consists of 4 Sections for total 200 marks. The objective test will have separate timing for every section. The candidates are required to qualify in each of the Tests by securing passing marks, to be decided by the Bank.

  • Descriptive Test: The Descriptive Test of 30 minutes duration with 50 marks will be a Test of English Language (Letter Writing & Essay). The candidates are required to qualify in the Descriptive Test by securing passing marks, to be decided by the Bank.

Descriptive Test paper of only those candidates will be evaluated who have scored qualifying marks in the Objective Tests and are placed adequately high as per total marks in objective test.

Penalty for Wrong Answers (Applicable to both – Preliminary and Main examination) There will be a penalty for wrong answers marked in the Objective Tests. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty to arrive at corrected score. If a question is left blank, i.e. no answer is marked by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.

Phase – III: Group Discussion & Interview

The aggregate marks of candidates qualifying in both the Objective Tests and Descriptive Test will be arranged in descending order in each category. The adequate number of candidates in each category, as decided by the Bank will be called for Group Discussion and Interview. The qualifying marks in Group Discussion &Interview will be as decided by the Bank.

Final Selection for SBI PO

The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination (Phase-I) will not be added for the selection and only the marks obtained in Main Examination (Phase-II), both in Objective Test and Descriptive Test, will be added to the marks obtained in GD & Interview (Phase-III) for preparation of the final merit list.

The candidates will have to qualify both in Phase-II and Phase-III separately. Marks secured by the candidates in the Written Test (out of 225 marks) are converted to out of 75 and marks secured in Group Discussion & Interview (out of 50 marks) are converted to out of 25. The final merit list is arrived at after aggregating converted marks of Written Test and Group Discussion &Interview out of 100 for each category. The selection will be made from the top merit ranked candidates in each category.

SBI Junior Associate or SBI Clerk:

Young graduates are recruited as Junior Associate in the Clerical Cadre. The Bank offers fast track growth opportunities wherein Junior Associates are eligible for promotion in Officer Cadre on completion of 3 years’ of service.

For SBI Clerk exam, age should be not below 20 years and not above 28 years as on stipulated date.

SBI clerk exam and syllabus:

Preliminary Examination for SBI Clerk

Preliminary Examination consisting of Objective Tests for 100 marks will be conducted online. This test would be of 1-hour duration consisting of 3 Sections as follows:

Candidates qualified in the main examination will be placed according to their marks (scored in the main examination only) in descending order in respective categories. The candidates from amongst those who qualify by ranking high enough in the merit will be called for interview in the ratio of maximum 3 candidates for each vacancy.

Test of knowledge of official and/or local language: Those who produce 10th standard mark sheet/certificate evidencing having studied official (local) language will not be subjected to any Language test. In the case of others, the language test will be conducted at the time of interview (if the interview is held) /before final selection (if the interview is not held). Candidates not found to be proficient in official and/or local language would be disqualified.

Interview and final selection for SBI Clerk:

Candidates qualified in the test will be placed according to their marks in descending order in respective categories. Depending upon the number of vacancies only a certain number of candidates from amongst those who qualify by ranking high enough in the merit will be called for interview in the ratio of maximum 3 candidates for each vacancy. Candidates are required to score minimum percentage marks (to be decided by the bank) in the interview to be considered for final selection. Final selection will be made on the basis of candidate’s performance in the test and interview took together.
